Hair follicles cycle through anagen (growth), catagen (regression) and telogen (rest). Wnt/beta-catenin signalling and dermal papilla growth factors sustain anagen, while androgen signalling through the androgen receptor and 5-alpha reductase drives follicular miniaturisation in pattern hair loss.
