Ultraviolet exposure drives reactive oxygen species formation, activates AP-1 and NF-kB signalling, and increases matrix metalloproteinase expression while reducing procollagen synthesis. The net result described in the literature is fragmented dermal collagen and elastin. UV filters remain the intervention with the strongest supporting evidence.
